Ivory Coast Dan Mask
A distinctive African mask with matt patination, carved from wood with aluminium eye surrounds and teeth.
Dan masks are worn by male masked dancers from the Dan people, aslo known as the Yacoubi of Ivory Coast who straddle the border region with Liberia. Poro society masks were traditionally carved only by initiates of the sdociety and used the give life and expression to spirits whiom the dancers, in a sense, "channel". During the trance like dance the wearer o fthe mask will speak in incoherant tongues which an elder the "translates" and relay to the assembled memebers of the society.
