The fabrics of Africa are as diverse as the people of this wonderful continent. Used not only for adornment- African fabrics communicate messages, signal status and have a rich history. From the Kente strips created in Ghana and worn by Ashanti royalty to the intricate geometric patterns of woven raffia cloth from the Kuba people of DRC- African fabrics are vibrant and tactile.
We love the deep blue of Indigo cloths from West Africa and the stunning designs to be found on Women's Kitenges (shawls) favoured by the people of East Africa. Methods of production include weaving, dying, appliqué and embroidery. Most importantly African fabric production has not given way to mass production. We intend to upload images of our African fabrics to the site soon.
